Study finds that use of latest bike helmet technology can reduce risk of head injuries
An article that published in Bloomberg News on June 25, 2018 discussed the results of a “first-of-its-kind study using the latest techniques for simulating head injuries.” The study found significant variations in how bike helmets protect against concussions, noting the use of older bike helmets that do not include the latest anti-concussion technology were more than twice as likely to result in injuries.
A key finding is that a relatively new technology known as Multi-Directional Impact Protection System (MIPS), when used in bike helmets, can lessen the risk of concussion.
The risk to bicyclists in northern Virginia is particularly high with drivers on busy residential streets often failing to look to their right before turning right on a red light. Blankingship & Keith has helped dozens of bicyclists recover for injuries sustained when they were struck by inattentive drivers. Widespread use of modern bike helmets could significantly improve the outcomes for bicyclists struck by cars.
